What is a Pterygium?
A pterygium is a fleshy, often triangular growth of tissue that develops on the white part of the eye (conjunctiva) and can extend onto the cornea. It is sometimes referred to as “surfer’s eye” due to its association with sun and wind exposure, though it is common among anyone with significant outdoor exposure.
Symptoms
- Visible growth on the white of the eye, sometimes extending toward the cornea
- Redness or irritation
- A persistent feeling of dryness or grittiness
- Blurred vision (if the growth extends onto the cornea)
- Cosmetic concern due to visible tissue growth
Pterygium removal is a relatively quick outpatient procedure performed under local anaesthesia. The abnormal tissue is carefully excised, and in many cases, a small graft (often from the patient’s own conjunctiva) is used to reduce the chance of recurrence and support healing.
